Take a Break From Your Scoring Focus for a Moment
Golf is many things to many people.
Whatever brings you to this great game, there is no wrong door.
Consider that there is another perspective of the game that is not usually at top of mind. Golf can be experienced as a learning opportunity to train the mind and come into contact with a greater understanding of ourselves and our world.
What is the contest? Is it with an opponent, the card, or with yourself? It’s often all three at once – though the struggle with yourself can have the greatest impact on any match and your score.
Your golf score is always there, every round, but beyond the number, your experience has the potential for you to gain a clearer understanding of yourself and an opening to a greater sense of equilibrium and harmony. Afterall, we should play golf to be better people, not just better golfers.
This is why golf can be a learning laboratory. Where else can you find yourself confronted by your entire psychology and philosophy of life on virtually every shot. Who am I playing for? What’s at stake here? What do others think of me? What does this say about who I am? Am I satisfied wit this or not? What am I trying to accomplish? All these questions come into play every round, though we mostly pay no attention.
Eventually the greatest golfers find their way through these questions. For some, these inquiries may be the key to reaching the highest tiers of the sport. For most of us, they may lead to a more peaceful inner state.
