Mental Golf Coaching
Most people contact me with a “chief complaint” and we start from there. Some people ask “what is mental coaching all about?”
Here’s a sample of how some people got started:
“I get so close in Monday qualifiers, but just can’t break through.”
“I hit it great on the driving range and can’t take it to the course.”
"I’ve heard that the mental part of golf is important. Can you teach me?"

-
"I could win my state championship but I keep losing to the same person for 5 years – she gets in my head somehow."
-
"Whenever I have a great match or great round going, I start feeling so much pressure that things sort of fall apart."
-
"There are a few holes on my course that I hate playing – and I always lose them in a match."
-
“I just don’t understand how to stop my thinking on the putting green. Can you help?”
-
"I have terrible first tee jitters."
-
"Can you help me find the zone?"
-
"I’m just about ready to quit this game. Help."

Once we start, the path becomes highly individualized. A lot can be done via telephone or zoom, but it’s preferable to connect in person. I emphasize the need to balance the technical; and mental approaches. It’s not about one or the other.
With new clients, I like to meet at the golf course clubhouse and spend some time getting to know their golf background issues, answer their questions and let them “sample” what it’s like to talk with me. I do not charge anything for the first meeting. I prefer subsequent sessions to be on the range, on the course, or on the green. I walk along and we stop as I ask questions and open up the dialogue.

"Thanks to Dr Rich I finally got past my nemesis in the state match play competition. It was never about my swing, it was always about something in my head that I needed to become aware of."
Carol R.
-
"I thoroughly enjoyed working with Dr Rich. He has a great gift to share. I plan to have more sessions. I’ve been working on tempo as he advised with great results – I’ve reduced my 3 putting by 50%."

"I found that the work I did with Dr Rich was so helpful and I refer to it often – before, during and after my rounds. It made me a better golfer -that’s for sure. I have really made progress managing my anxiety on the course and now I actually feel comfortable most of the time – even in competition or when I’m facing shots I used to dread – like bunkers and water hazards. I finally learned how to breathe thanks to Dr Rich and I think that has made a huge difference."

"My five sessions with Dr Rich were wonderful. We figured out together what I was really looking for. I thought it was all about a lower score, and it turns out that was not the right goal. He has a way of interacting that made it easy to explore some new approaches without feeling self-conscious. As I am getting older and losing some of the joy of the game, I was really happy to find new ways to get involved with the game I’ve loved so much."
